R. I. P. Les Paul - by Larry Coryell - August 14, 2009

In Memory of Les Paul
by Larry Coryell - August 14, 2009

Sadly, the guitar world has lost the innovative guitarist and inventor, Les Paul. I first heard Les on the radio when he and his wife Mary Ford were topping the Hit Parade charts in the 1950's. He had a distinctive musical style that appealed not only to the guitarists in the audience but his message reached all the people regardless of their musical training. When I moved to New York I had occassion to be driven out to Les' house in New Jersey for a rehearsal with the great trumpeter Doc Severinsen. That's where Les heard me play for the first time. I was really excited to meet such a great legend. Over the years we encountered each other in such places as his Monday night's at Fat Tuesday's and his big birthday parties in June. I remember sitting in on a Monday night where Steve Miller was in the audience. There was a cult around Les because of his twin gifts, the Django inspired guitar playing of course, but also all the technological innovations he brought forth for the guitar and for recording. One of our fondest memories, was when my wife Tracey and I went to the Rock -n- Roll Hall Of Fame in Cleveland. We went to the Les Paul wing and saw behind the glass a section of railroad track that Les had cut in order to begin his early experiments with creating the solid body guitar. Tracey and I were delighted as we walked around and saw all the recordings and recording devices that Les produced.

He aged gracefully, he had a great sense of humor, he was first and foremost a musician and I was honored to be playing at his 92nd birthday at the Cutting Room in New York, where he came on stage and joined me in one of his favorites, 'September Song'. At the end I was asked to sub for him at his Monday nights which had been moved to the Iridium. I played with his band, always in the spirit of Les' music, which was a very natural thing for me to do because Les could swing and he could play hot and he always got a great sound. I will leave it to other people to impart in detail his myriad technological accomplishments. I always remember him for his great guitar playing and joyful attitude towards life.
Larry Coryell
August 14, 2009

Larry with Les Paul at his 92nd Birthday Bash at the Cutting Room in NYC.
Photos by Dennis Haklar
