LARRY CORYELL LIVE AT THE VILLAGE GATE is a good example of hard rock combined with jazz vibes. You can compare this album with Jimi Hendrix's BAND OF GYPSYS. Both albums are a fusion of rock, jazz, soul.

Many critics called this album an ode to Jimi Hendrix. I understand why, but it is an album on its own. LARRY CORYELL LIVE AT THE VILLAGE GATE kicks off with 'The Opening'. It's a very bluesy song with simple vocals of Larry. The solo is very powerful and the band can keep up with him. 'After Later' is a hard fusiontrack. Harry Wilkinson battles, Mervin Bronson pumps the song right and Larry Coryell gives a rock solo with distortion and wah wah. Typical Jimi Hendrix sound, but with a complicated solo of Larry Coryell. There's also a song of Chick Corea, called 'Entardecendo En Saudade'. The riff is mediterrean and repeating. A crossing between Spanish and Arabic. Very exotic, but also sounding a little bit thin. You really miss the sound of Chick Corea here. But Larry gives a hell of solo here! 'Can You Follow?' starts with a drumsolo of Harry Wilkinson. It is a complicated rhythm, but very jazzy. It's a big part for Harry Wilkinson.The last song is 'Beyond These Chilling Winds'. Julie Coryell sings along at the beginning. It's a cute duet between Larry and his wife. A little bit outdated but it fits and it sounds good too. After the vocals Larry gives a rocking solo again. It's a very good final.


LARRY CORYELL LIVE AT THE VILLAGE GATE was recorded in 1971. During this performance Larry Coryell was in shape. You can hear good and hard solo's. He was on flame. Harry Wilkinson and Mervin Bronson aren't inspired. The rhythm section sounded very thin and doesn't give a hell of a show, unfortunately. But they all played as a team. I understand the comparison between this album and the BAND OF GYSPY of Jimi Hendrix. They are on many ways alike, but this is playing on another level. If you like good rock solo's and a little bit underground atmosphere, than LARRY CORYELL LIVE AT THE VILLAGE GATE is your kind of thing.
