Over the years I have been fortunate enough to see Larry Coryell play a few times when he came to the southland. Although each sighting was incredible I think my favorite was back in April of 1980 when he played at a place that used to be in Huntington Beach called the Golden Bear.

I'll never forget the show because he didn't give the crowd much of a chance to sit down in their chairs. A band opened for a few songs and he came out and played with them for roughly 30 minutes.

Then the band took a break while Larry unplugged his Hagstrom electric and put on an Ovation Adamas 6 and played for a half hour by himself.

When he took off the acoustic 6 string instead of taking a break be put on an Ovation 12 string and played for another 20 minutes (solo, solo).

After this he took off the guitar (break time I thought), he called back in the band for one last 20 or 30 minute set.

Best show I ever saw.

What was you favorite show

My most memorable gig is always that last but then, I've only been able to see LC play on two occassions and the last was at the Catalina Bar and Grill in LA in 2003. We had hoped to attend the SF concert but life has once again got into the way of living.

Hello everyone,
Any show w/Larry is my favorite one! The best ,most recent ones I've caught were:Last year at The Jazz Bakery in Culver city w/the Trio...Unbelievably Amazing, words can't do it justice! Of course,I must mention the Eleventh House Reunion shows with my drum hero, teacher,& friend Alphonse Mouzon. Larry & Alphonse together are the perfest combination, always,in my book! Also,Counts Jam Band Reunion, which I'd love to see again,as there were sound problems at the show I attended at the Key Club in LA,but just to see Larry,Steve Marcus,& Steve Smith on the same stage was one more dream come true! Almost forgot the Coryells at Catalina Bar & grill,LA.It dosen't get better than to see/hear Larry w/his two outstanding sons!
Thanks Larry! ~Cort

Yeah like others sais, the last one is the most memorable. I really dug all the L.C. shows I saw in the 70's and 80's and the last one was special. He played solo in Phila in Jan. He's not getting older but better

I envy you guys cause I live in Canada and have never seen Larry Live. If he ever plays in Toronto again that might be my only chance as I lived in the far and remote north for 21 years but now live in Southern Ontario.

I've been fortunate enought to see Larry in many different types of situations..... here's some of my favorties

1) Lighthouse in Redondo Beach, Ca -Larry performed solo.... he played both electric and acoustic. What was really cool was seeing him "freak" on purple haze/ 3rd stone from the sun and johnny b. goode (which he sang) Overall a cool experience.

2) Larry and Michel Urbaniak at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach. This show had great versions of Spain and Ms Julie.

3) Larry solo at some small place in Marina Del Rey Ca. - Favorite songs - Firebird Suite and My Funny Valentine. Oh yeah , I almost forgot, he did some improv on the piano. Larry went berserk and flew off into another dimension! Seems Larry channeled Edgar Varese, Monk, and Albert Ayler simultaneously on the piano.

4) Larry with Jimmy Smith at the Catalina Bar and Grill - Need I say more. Jimmy is the baddest ever to grace the B3.Larry had the time of his life playing along side Jimmy. Really loved everything about this show.

5) Jazz Bakery Culver City, Ca - The final show was great. Julian Coryell sat in on the 2nd set and gave his father a run for his money. Julian really rocked the joint and Larry was beaming ear-to-ear the whole time. One could tell how proud he is of his son.

6) The 4th Annual Jazz Cruise - All sorts of great musicians were on hand - All 3 Heath Brothers (Jimmy, Percy, Tootie), Benny Golson, David "Fathead" Newman, Lou Donaldson, Terrell Stafford, Russell Malone, Benny Green, Hank Crawford, Cyrus Chestnut, Jack DeJohnette.
What can I say... Jazz Heaven at sea.
Also, Larry, Buster Williams, and Paul Wertico on the same stage. They played 5 times together during the week and all shows were cool. Toku Do, Dragon's Gate, Moanin', and Twinkle Tinkle were some of the favs performed. What more could Larry ask for when playing a Monk tune except to have Buster Williams on bass. Buster is the baddest bassist to have when playing Monk. Actually he's the most original living bassist period - enuff said!

I am glad to be part of the new discussion...after so many years. I've seen Larry Coryell perform many times since about the early 1980's. The first time I saw him was the most memorable. At the now defunct Lone Star (?) at 5th and 13th in Manhattan. he played with Brian Keane in an acoustic duo set. They played Bolero and all the rest of that very difficult material. God, they burned it up. I remember not believeing what I was hearing...Since then I saw LC with: Bireli, Vic Juris, Sharon Isbin and Laurindo Almeida, Julie, Solo, Julian, Al Dimeola and Bireli, his current Trio...oh and Emily Remler. Such an awesome duo. I recently saw the Trio with John Abercrombie and Badi Assad. They were very good.

Here are some of my favorites:

'75 duo w/ Steve Khan in the Savoy Room a small club in Detroit

'75 11th House headlining a triple bill with George Benson and Joe Farrell

opening for Frank Zappa in Ann Arbor with the quartet version of the 11th House.

A private solo show for Borders employee in '93. He brought backing tapes of Fallen Angel and tore up What's Going On and some solo pieces

a couple of shows at the Firefly Club w/ Wertico in Ann Arbor last year. He played for about 3 hours each time!!
